An appeal to all my academic colleagues. If you're going to secretly break the strike, by doing your research at home where no one can see, I understand. There are deadlines and there's never enough time to do the research properly without straying into unpaid time.

But please please, if you do this today or any other strike day, or if you do it in the evening or at weekends or during your leave or statutory holidays (the many weeks when we work more than we're paid for), please please mark that publication as your own, and not for the REF.

The university is not entitled to claim research that you paid for, research done in unpaid time, research and contributions to the research community done over and above your weekly working hours.

Otherwise if you strike from teaching but not from reffable research you hurt only the students, and the university is laughing all the way to the research funding bank. They cut your pay. You do more research, for free, on that day. That's helping them not hurting them.

So we must routinely withhold research that was not fully and adequately paid for by the institution that claims it. Then the will have a chance of making the management take action.
