From niche to norm. It’s ten years since the publication of the first EU bioeconomy strategy. There’s a general feeling that we need to push it higher up the agenda hence this event in Brussels today @CEIBois @EUSTAFOR @COPACOGECA @CEPF_EU https://t.co/nu38N7GS6r

Goldsmith resigns accusing prime minister Sunak of being ‘uninterested’ in environment. In the same week the UK's independent committee on climate change in its annual report concluded that the UK government has given up its climate leadership role. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/jun/30/zac-goldsmith-resigns-accusing-government-of-apathy-over-environment?CMP=share_btn_tw

By bringing in young people you bring in people who grasp the bioeconomy quicker (if they haven’t already) than the older generations who may understand their industries very well but are yet to, or struggle to, grasp the bioeconomy. Good observation at today's event in Brussels. https://n.respublicae.eu/LRFBrussels/status/1674717150446010369

A major impediment to the bioeconomy in Ireland is legislation preventing building in wood above 4 storeys. Within 500m of today's conference on Rue Montoyer in Brussels, Belgium is building in wood to 8 storeys @CEIBois @coilltenews @SeanKellyMEP @ciarancuffe @SCC_Ireland https://t.co/DBBaXek7K0

Re @EUSTAFOR @coilltenews While here in Brussels we have the second eight storey timber build well underway on Rue Montoyer next to the European Parliament. The structural timber substituting for CO2 creating concrete & steel and instead storing carbon safely well into the future. @COPACOGECA @CEPF_EU https://t.co/GkLC5vuFmr

A correct observation from Marco Rupp of the Bio-based Industries Consortium "We need a biomass strategy" Essentially because the demand is going to be huge going forward as we seek to replace fossil fuels with biomass to make nature based materials @biconsortium @COPACOGECA https://t.co/Li7A5c8gsG

Re @horton_official @ZacGoldsmith @RishiSunak It's a gross generalisation, I realise, but the richer you are the less likely you care about climate change because a) you think (mistakenly) that your wealth will protect you b) the lifestyle changes that caring about the climate demand are much greater ie no helicopter trips.

An 8 storey engineered timber build well underway very near the European Parliament in Brussels. The timber structure is substituting for concrete &/or steel both of which have big carbon footprints. Instead wood stores carbon something concrete & steel can’t do @CEIBois https://t.co/VBSDYTNixs

Today we publish @theCCCuk annual report on progress in reducing UK emissions.
We reflect on policy progress in a year that brought the UK’s first recorded 40C day and spiralling fossil fuel costs.
And there’s a reality check on the acceleration needed for 2030 and beyond.

In tackling climate change & biodiversity loss there’s no silver bullet. But I’d struggle to suggest a single change that we could do now that would contribute more than most farms converting to a minimum of 10% tree cover in an agroforestry setting https://www.agforward.eu/

Agree re the beaver & likewise with agroforestry which can reduce heavy rain water run off from farmland considerably & instead taking more water down into the soil for subsequent ‘release’ in drier weather. Work with nature https://www.agforward.eu/
