On Wednesday 22nd November a conference on Iran was held at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The keynote speaker was the Iranian opposition leader Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI).
The meeting, organised by the Friends of a Free Iran (FOFI), was attended by a large number of representatives from different political groups and a significant number of their assistants.
Maryam Rajavi addressed the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, emphasising the role of the Iranian regime in fomenting instability. She highlighted the latest atrocities, including the kidnapping of civilians, bombings and forced displacement, and called on the international community to stand up to the warmongering dictatorship in Iran.
Mrs Rajavi pointed to the Iranian regime's historical involvement in violent actions, such as the massacre of 30,000 political prisoners in 1988 and the killing of 1,500 protesters in November 2019. She asserted that the clerical regime led by Khamenei has been a major contributor to regional conflicts, including those in Yemen, Syria and Iraq and declared the clerical regime an imminent threat to international peace and security under Chapter VII of the UN Charter.
The opposition leader called for concrete measures to counter the regime's aggression, including placing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on the terrorist list, closing the regime's embassies in Europe, expelling its agents from European institutions and reinstating UN Security Council resolutions with sanctions against Iran.
She called for the recognition of the Iranian people's struggle for the overthrow of the regime and the accountability of the regime's leaders for genocide and crimes against humanity.
