RT by @MarietjeSchaake: In regulating emerging technologies like generative AI, governments face the seemingly impossible task of overseeing systems that may not be fully understood by their own developers, note @stanfordcyber’s @MarietjeSchaake and Steven Schuurman. bit.ly/4cnndFM

RT by @MarietjeSchaake: 🚨BREAKING: A few days ahead of its IPO, Reddit has just been notified by the US Federal Trade Commission that they are investigating the company's AI training deals. This is what Reddit disclosed:

"(...) on March 14, 2024, we received a letter from the FTC advising us that the FTC’s staff is conducting a non-public inquiry focused on our sale, licensing, or sharing of user-generated content with third parties to train AI models. Given the novel nature of these technologies and commercial arrangements, we are not surprised that the FTC has expressed interest in this area. We do not believe that we have engaged in any unfair or deceptive trade practice. The letter indicated that the FTC staff was interested in meeting with us to learn more about our plans and that the FTC intended to request information and documents from us as its inquiry continues. RT by @MarietjeSchaake: This week, OpenAI saw its products booed at SXSW, and an embarrassing viral news cycle after its CTO claimed not to know if it had trained its models on YouTube videos.

Both incidents suggest the tide is turning against the world's biggest AI company:

RT by @MarietjeSchaake: One of the simplest but most useful and appropriate pieces of AI regulation to adopt at the moment is to require model providers to document the training data they used. This is something that the @EU_Commission AI Act gets right … on p.62 of its 272 pages (!).

RT by @MarietjeSchaake: Today’s attack on one of the very few remaining @UNRWA distribution centres in the comes as food supplies are running out, hunger is widespread and, in some areas, turning into famine.

Every day, we share the coordinates of all our facilities across the Gaza Strip with parties to the conflict. The Israeli Army received the coordinates including of this facility yesterday.

The @UN, its personnel, premises and assets must be protected at all times. Since this war began, attacks against UN facilities, convoys and personnel have become commonplace in blatant disregard to international humanitarian law.

I am calling once again for an independent inquiry into these violations and the need for accountability.
