Το 2024 σηματοδοτεί την 50ή επέτειο της τουρκικής εισβολής, 50 χρόνια συνεχιζόμενης, παράνομης κατοχής. Πέντε δεκαετίες διαίρεσης, συνεχών παραβιάσεων των θεμελιωδών ελευθεριών και των βασικών ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων στην ευρωπαϊκή ήπειρο δεν μπορούν να συνεχιστούν.

Πάντα, αλλά ιδιαίτερα σε επετείους όπως αυτή, οι σκέψεις μου είναι συνεχώς με τις εκατοντάδες χιλιάδες Κυπρίων που εκτοπίστηκαν και χρόνο με τον χρόνο περιμένουν τη στιγμή που θα επιστρέψουν στα σπίτια τους. Είναι με τις οικογένειες των αγνοουμένων που αναζητούν απεγνωσμένα πληροφορίες για την τύχη των αγαπημένων τους προσώπων. Είναι με τους εγκλωβισμένους που περιμένουν στωικά το τέλος της διαίρεσης.

Είναι καιρός για ειρήνη. Όλοι οι Κύπριοι – Ελληνοκύπριοι και Τουρκοκύπριοι, Μαρωνίτες, Αρμένιοι, Λατίνοι – αξίζουν τα ίδια ανθρώπινα δικαιώματα και θεμελιώδεις ελευθερίες όπως όλοι οι άλλοι Ευρωπαίοι. Αξίζουν να ευημερούν σε μια επανενωμένη χώρα, κράτος μέλος της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης, όπου τα ανθρώπινα δικαιώματα και οι θεμελιώδεις ελευθερίες τους διασφαλίζονται και υποστηρίζονται».

The Turkish occupation regime is attempting to create new faits accomplis within the buffer zone in the area of Pyla, by planning an illegal entry into the area for the construction of a road that will connect the occupied village of Arsos with a forward illegal military outpost of the occupation regime.

It concerns an attempt at a very serious violation of the status quo. The Government of Cyprus is working toward thwarting this Turkish design in cooperation with Permanent Members of the UN Security Council, the EU, and UNFICYP, as well as with the Government of Greece. Contacts are underway toward Ankara, at the highest level, by the international community, stressing the seriousness of the violation, as well as the negative repercussions from such an act, both for the prospect of the resumption of the negotiations on the Cyprus issue and for the EU-Turkish issues.

The Government of Cyprus expects the Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus to prevent the plans in question, on the basis of the provisions of its mandate.
