Today is #WorldCroissantDay 🥐, the origin of which is Austrian, rather than French as many believe. In 1683, Ottoman troops were besieging Vienna. To gain entry, they tunnelled in at night, and the city’s bakers – who worked at night – heard the noise and alerted the people.

That’s how they managed to defeat the Ottoman army, and they celebrated the retreat of the Turks by creating a cake in the shape of the crescent moon 🌘🌒 emblazoned on the Turks’ flags.
