Deeply saddened to learn the passing of former Danish Commissioner Ritt Bjerregaard.

I keep fond memories of our work together when I was Minister of Environment, which turned into true friendship.

In some regions, demographic decline goes✋in✋w/ difficulties to retain, develop & attract talent

In a knowledge-based society/economy, lack of a skilled workforce creates a vicious circle that hampers the capacity of such regions to innovate & create economic opportunities

All 🇪🇺countries are affected by ageing of population, but some regions are more impacted than others.

82 regions are in - or at risk of - a talent trap due to:

➡️shrinking working age population
➡️low share of people w/higher education
➡️young people leaving at a fast rate

All 27 🇪🇺 countries included provisions for the NEB in their 2021-2027 Cohesion programmes.

We hope to see more NEB projects in regions & local communities in coming years.

Cohesion Policy will continue to support MS & NEB actors in this quest.
