The EU Regulation 1151/2012 grants protection to PDOs and GIs, as intellectual property rights. A uniform protection throughout the EU.

'Feta' is a Protected Designation of Origin, and can only be used for cheeses produced in the specific geographical area in Greece (and according to product specifications).
The Court confirmed that it does not matter if the products are to be sold in the EU or outside the EU.
