@WalkerMarcus As @jaynordlinger wisely observes, genuine isolationists - "Yes, Putin's a shit, but let me know when he reaches Tunbridge Wells" - are thin on the ground. Most "isolationists" go on to qualify their position with excuses - or even guarded support - for the baddies.

A very fair and balanced assessment. Odd that any of it should be considered controversial. ?s=20&t=bFadC9-xfPAnq5CT_mYu-g
RT @SkyNews: "There are complexities and sensitivities when you move from the area of sexuality to the question of gender", says PM Boris Johnson, adding "I don't think it's reasonable" for children to "take decisions on their gender" without a parent's involvement.

I was pretty sceptical of NATO myself 20 years ago. It seemed to me to have done its job in 1990, and to have been blundering around ever since in search of a role. But it is odd to see this mood among US Republicans just when NATO is proving its worth. businessinsider.com/63-republi

I strongly supported civil partnerships, on grounds that all adult citizens should be equal before the law. Likewise equalisation of the age of consent, adoption rights etc. But I struggle to get worked up about whether or not a conference takes place.

Does it count for nothing that George Austen, like Jane, was a convinced abolitionist?

How on Earth has Twitter managed to convince itself that the government relinquishing control of a TV station is somehow proof of its dictatorial tendencies?

Good for @RishiSunak. He is reaching into his own pocket to buy bursaries for poorer kids to get a first-class education. Why is this remotely controversial? These “Rishi is rich” stories are becoming fearfully dull.

When other governments own TV stations, we sniffily call them “state broadcasters”. Yet here, we cling to the bizarre belief that working for the government somehow makes people neutral.

@Chafuen Libertarianism is logical but counter-intuitive. Human beings are tribal and hierarchical, which is why pure libertarian parties never get above 5 per cent. As part of a broader conservative alliance, we can move mountains (see Thatcher, Reagan etc). On our own? Not so much.

Roger Scruton used to talk of Eastern European politicians who were "nationalists without being patriots". Vladimir Putin is an example. He has subjugated, looted, diminished and dishonoured Russia. But he knows that a sense of wounded Russian nationalism benefits him personally.

I have my criticisms of Viktor Orbán, but it is hardly surprising that Hungarians preferred his record of solid economic growth to the dromedary of an opposition movement, an awkward mésalliance of post-communists, post-fascists, socialists and Christian Democrats.

@shaneparr_ The same could be said of every country in the world. Keeping quiet is always the easier option. But there are times when speaking out is the right thing to do. It is at such times that we get to assess the essential decency of a nation.

I always try to give Israel the benefit of the doubt. In a tough neighbourhood, with dangers few of us have to face, it has remained a law-based democracy. But its refusal to condemn Russian atrocities is doing it huge damage - especially among its natural friends and allies.

Let’s have no more talk of face-saving or exit ramps. Putin and his henchmen need to be put on trial. If they are not, the law-based international order constructed since 1945 will be in ruins. thetimes.co.uk/article/bodies-
