I was pretty sceptical of NATO myself 20 years ago. It seemed to me to have done its job in 1990, and to have been blundering around ever since in search of a role. I strongly supported civil partnerships, on grounds that all adult citizens should be equal before the law. Likewise equalisation of the age of consent, adoption rights etc. But I struggle to get worked up about whether or not a conference takes place.

@Chafuen Libertarianism is logical but counter-intuitive. Human beings are tribal and hierarchical, which is why pure libertarian parties never get above 5 per cent. As part of a broader conservative alliance, we can move mountains (see Thatcher, Reagan etc). On our own? Not so much.

Roger Scruton used to talk of Eastern European politicians who were "nationalists without being patriots". Vladimir Putin is an example. He has subjugated, looted, diminished and dishonoured Russia. But he knows that a sense of wounded Russian nationalism benefits him personally.

I always try to give Israel the benefit of the doubt. In a tough neighbourhood, with dangers few of us have to face, it has remained a law-based democracy. But its refusal to condemn Russian atrocities is doing it huge damage - especially among its natural friends and allies.
