RT @DanielJHannan: Roger Scruton likened the monarchy to the enchanting light on a Christmas tree which we perfectly well remember having placed there ourselves. It may be an elective institution; but there is something wonderful about roots that reach back to Kenneth MacAlpin and Alfred the Great.

"Britain should remain a monarchy for as long as a majority of its people want".
A statement to which, I hope, the vast majority of republicans and the vast majority of monarchists could subscribe.

@mcivor_h @weimers Let's look at the places where they've been "given the boot" since Elizabeth's accession: Afghanistan, Burundi, Egypt, Ethiopia, Greece, Iraq, Iran, Laos, Libya, Nepal, Rwanda, Tunisia, Vietnam, Yemen. Do you see that list as a great advert for republicanism?

@sotcstill Almost everyone in the British Isles is descended from Edward III. Pretty much the entire pre-war population of Western Europe is related to William the Conqueror, the ultimate land grabber.

In any case, anyone who complains about "farmers undercut by unchecked imports" while pretending to be concerned solely about the cost of living forfeits the right to be listened to - on this issue and on all economic subjects.

There was a strong case for staying in the single market: it would have obviated many of the problems we had over severance terms, Ireland etc. Rejoining it now is a different question. Having paid a high negotiating price for regulatory autonomy, the key thing is to use it.

When we cheer the Queen, we are cheering the continuity and legitimacy embodied in constitutional monarchy. Other places have coups and revolutions because they have disputes over where ultimate sovereignty lies. We have a neutral arbiter, separate from generals and politician.

@GeorgeTrefgarne There is a difference between not leaving the single market (which we both backed) and rejoining it, having opted for a complete rupture.

My friend @GeorgeTrefgarne makes a thoughtful point. The reason universities are turning against private schools is not that they refuse to cater to the poor. Almost all of them offer bursaries and grants to underprivileged kids. It's that they are beyond the means of most dons.

Any government that claims to be doing all it can to tackle the cost of living crisis is being dishonest unless it has scrapped its tariff and non-tariff barriers. With the exceptions of Singapore, New Zealand and a handful of other states, they're all lying.

Unlike the paramilitaries, the RUC were subject to rules designed to minimise casualties. Hence the numbers. Of the 3,500 Troubles fatalities, 60% were killed by republican terrorists, 30% by loyalist terrorists and 10% by the security forces. The police killed 50 but lost 319.

I wonder whether the underlying problem isn’t our complete lack of interest in economics. If MPs and voters think we can spend our way out of an inflation crisis, why try anything difficult?
