"Did the abdication of Romulus Augustulus on 4 September 476 really mark the end of the Roman Empire in the West? The answer is that it did – for Odoacer refused to accept a Western Emperor. He requested the rank of Patrician; but the title that he preferred to use was Rex"

@dorsey_not @BrooksNewmark The great man used to offer his services as a physician free to people in need - as, indeed, @RandPaul does. I very much doubt he’d disapprove of a wholly private initiative to pull women and children out of a war zone.

In February @BrooksNewmark left his comfortable life for Ukraine. Since then, he has pulled thousands of civilians out of danger, sometimes across minefields. He has done it quietly, unfussily - and largely unnoticed. Nice to see him acknowledged here. dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1

RT @DavidAdeola: @DanielJHannan I believe the police shouldn’t be too quick to remove them. They should be left glued on the seats for at least 24 hours otherwise no lessons learnt.

In the time that the USA has had 1 constitution, Ecuador has had 21, Venezuela 26, the Dominican Republic 32. That's one of the reasons that the movement of population is overwhelmingly one way.

RT @DanielJHannan: Odessa is vibrant and dazzling. The opera is reopening tonight. Yes, there’s still a curfew, but almost everything else is returning to normal.
I don’t want to minimise the suffering elsewhere in Ukraine. But I do want to salute the resolve of local people.

These pundits are going to get quite a shock when @trussliz applies her free market principles and when - angels and ministers of grace defend us - they work.

In 1914 and 1939 we embarked on ruinous wars, not because we had been attacked, but to defend the sovereignty of a friendly country. We endured terrible losses, but we stuck it out.
Today we are enduring price rises while others do the fighting. Surely we can stick this out, too.

RT @DBinSydney: The miracle: the move from status to contract over the last 10,000 years of human history. It has led to our amazing modern civilisation, created in the last 300 years.

Daniel Hannan nails it in a way that I’ve never heard before, in 3 short minutes.

Consider the possibility - just the possibility - that inflation might soon peak. Commodity and shipping prices have begun to fall, and the measures taken in response to the energy crisis - more storage, power stations brought back into use etc - are starting to take effect.

Spot on by @CitySamuel. Instead of asking whether "the public" should "own" energy companies, let's phrase the question as "should taxpayers bail out energy companies?" telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/09/0

@JohnRushforth1 Actually, it's the precise opposite of whataboutery. Whataboutery means excusing bad behaviour from your friends on grounds of similar bad behaviour from your enemies. What I'm arguing for is consistency. I'll let @JonahDispatch explain.

@castlvillageman It is amazing what implausible lies people will fall for when they want to believe them. There never was any such meeting, as can easily be verified. Plus, I speak French. But more than 4,000 Europhiles are dim enough to applaud. Ah, Twitter. Never change.

My friend ⁦@BrooksNewmark⁩ has so far evacuated 14,000 women & children from the war zone. We spent today in Mykolaiv, which is under constant bombardment and has lost its water supply, but where we still found some amazing cakes. The resilience of Ukrainians is humbling.

I was in Suffolk. More immediately, can you imagine Eurocrats scheduling a meeting in August?
Twitter really is a laboratory for every kind of cognitive bias. People will believe the most implausible lies if they confirm their prejudices.

When a different bunch of loons stormed the US Capitol, seeking to impose their preference over that of the democratic majority, everyone rightly condemned them. Let’s not hear any excuses for this lot.
