RT by @Brendandonn: Rejoiners will be shooting themselves in the foot if they embrace the exceptionalist narrative that it is only opt-outs which make EU membership tolerable for the UK. We will never be able to rejoin if that is our mindset.

RT by @Brendandonn: I rather fear for the future well-being of anyone whose heart is adversely affected by the incompetence on European issues of Sir John Hayes or his colleagues in the Conservative Party. Take no notice of them.Don’t even ignore them.

One of the great disservices Brexit has done to the country is to transform the Conservative Party from a responsible party of government into an erratic populist rabble. Even those on the left of the political spectrum should find this disturbing.

RT by @Brendandonn: If you are in the business of predicting the future the past is unfortunately all you have to go on. This usually inhibits disruptive predictions. But the underlying lesson of history is that the future will only resemble the past until it stops doing so.

RT by @Brendandonn: It’s surely over-generous to describe David Frost as a cause of the Conservative malaise. His choice as the negotiator of Brexit’s terms was only a symptom of Conservative dysfunction. If they hadn’t chosen him they would inevitably have chosen someone equally ill-suited

The Conservative Party used to pride itself on its realism. For today’s Conservative Party reality consists of whatever the echo chamber of the Conservative membership and the right wing press say that it is. Reality is therefore a function of belief and not the other way round.

RT by @Brendandonn: Striking that the “One Nation Conservatives” only apparently object to the government’s “more conspicuously” breaching the UK’s international obligations. They will acquiesce in illegality, just as long as it is done in a discreet way.

RT by @Brendandonn: Ms. Jenkyns is right that we haven’t had a proper Conservative government for many years. The current anti-European obsession of the party has destroyed its traditional values of moderation, rationality and honourable pragmatism. The damage is almost certainly irreparable.

RT by @Brendandonn: Charlie Haughey used to say that the only question that matters in politics is who’s holding the parcel when the music stops. Frost was a principal packer of today’s Conservative parcel. He obviously doesn’t want to be caught holding it when the music stops.

RT by @Brendandonn: The number of Brexiters is steadily declining precisely because fewer and fewer people now believe that Brexit can ever be made to work. The obvious next stage is for more and more people to believe that we can and should rejoin the EU. We are going down a one way street.

RT by @Brendandonn: Whatever you think about the euro and Schengen it is very difficult to imagine that the EU would allow us to rejoin if they thought we wanted to continue “cherry-picking.” Refusal to join Schengen and the euro would very probably be seen as proof of lack of British commitment.

RT by @Brendandonn: As the series “The Thick of it” went on it became less amusing because the reality of British political life converged with the programme’s supposedly comic exaggerations. British political culture has been going downhill for a number of years now. Brexit reinforced the process.
