Re @SaveFOM British governments of always prefer to decide for themselves whether they are cheating on the European rules or not. Unsurprisingly, said governments usually conclude that they are scrupulously observing the rules. Unless of course the rules were wrong in the first place.

Re @NicholasTyrone Having promoted the revolutionary change of Brexit, the Conservative government now reverts to its traditional role as defender of the status quo. It’s all nonsense of course. If Brexit could be done, it can be undone.

Re @chrisgreybrexit The know -nothings do the public an unintentional service by fuelling your outrage. You manage to transform their random dross into precise and precious analysis, from which we all benefit. Many thanks.

Re @chrisgreybrexit I rarely disagree with the underlying analysis. Sometimes I draw divergent conclusions from the analysis. Different strokes for different folks.

Re @NicholasTyrone Sunak would lose the already wobbly support of his Party if he attempted to sack Braverman. He is damned either which way. His cowardly behaviour earlier this week about the Partygate report shows that he will always opt for a quiet(er) life in the short term.

Re @MrHarryCole @JohnGHart @FrankLuntz Most of the Conservative MPs in question don’t need to be told by Central Office or anyone else that their seats are in danger. They are looking for a rescuer and increasingly they realise that Sunak is not that saviour. Desperate times may well lead them to desperate choices.

Re @PaulLeach53 @MrHarryCole @JohnGHart @FrankLuntz It might have been a good idea to change the captain of the Titanic. The new man could scarcely have done worse than his predecessor.

Re @mikegalsworthy @RichardHewison Hammond was for three years a leading member of the Conservative government which saw bringing about Brexit as its central mission. He should be ashamed of himself.

Re @goodclimate Throughout the UK’s membership of the EU, British ministers routinely suffered from the delusion that they were acting rationally and their partners were not. It is interesting to see Hammond still labouring under the same delusion. Interesting, but also sad at the same time.

Re @Usherwood Will there not be a spectrum of views among member states? The Commission will need to broker a consensus among them. If the Commission is unenthusiastic about helping a new Labour government, the EU consensus it brokers is likely to be at the “unhelpful” end of the spectrum.

@acgrayling Brexit has not just exposed but also exacerbated the rot underlying our politics and constitution. If “Project Fear” existed ( which is more than doubtful) it spectacularly understated the non-economic damage that Brexit would provoke.

@APHClarkson The Conservative Party believes that everyone, whatever their background, should have the right to donate millions of pounds to the Party. In this context, “equal opportunities” is very much a Conservative slogan.
