This morning I have submitted this parliamentary question about UNRWA. It is my duty as representative of the people to be their voice and ask for answers to such serious issues. Do we, yes or no, pay for Islamic terrorism with European citizens’ money?
In response to the extremely serious allegations by Israel about the involvement of UNRWA personnel in the October 7th terrorist attack, the European Commission stated that it will assess further steps and draw lessons based on the result of the full and comprehensive investigation.
I urge the EU and its Member States to suspend funding of UNRWA pending the investigation. Belgium is one of the last EU countries who still did not take action, whilst chairing the Union.
Is this acceptable ? I don’t think so.
It is not the first time the European Commission hears about this issue.
In October, I already asked a priority question on the attack on Israel and demanded checks on whether European aid funds are not ending up with the Islamic terror group Hamas. Until today, I have not received a reply.
On December 6th, I requested the Commission to issue a full review of EU financial assistance to Palestine. Again, I have not yet seen an answer.
But I do not give up and this time I do not only expect the EU High representative to answer my question, but also that he will take concrete action. The victims of terrorism, as well as European taxpayers, deserve his full attention.
