Did banks in South Africa finance Hamas? An investigation by the Jerusalem Post reveals a South African network that provides funds to the terrorist organisation, pretending to support charitable activities,

writes. To stop Hamas, we must also stop the sources of its funding. They collect money, not only through traditional means but also through crypto-currencies.
I therefore also want to speed up the strict crypto rules to counter Hamas funding.
The terror group Hamas appears to have hundreds of crypto accounts used to raise funds. Crypto currencies are also used to move revenue.
On behalf of the European Parliament, I negotiated a law last year to make it easier for authorities to track crypto transactions of criminals and terrorists. For instance, crypto platforms must keep good records of who their customers are and cooperate compulsorily in investigations. The law received almost unanimous support in the European Parliament.
Officially, the new rules only take effect at European level from the end of 2024. I call on member states and the Belgian presidency to take steps now and work with crypto platforms to stop Hamas money flows. This cooperation is badly needed to keep crypto currencies safe for well-intentioned investors while keeping terrorists out of the crypto world.
