With European elections just one year away, the Spring 2023 Eurobarometer survey released this week shows citizens strongly support democracy and display a high-level of awareness of #EE2024.

71% acknowledge the EU's impact on their daily lives.
Citizens most approve EU support to Ukraine (69%) and the defence of democracy and rule of law (64%).

Interest in the next European elections is up 6% in comparison to one year prior to the 2019 European elections.
In addition, 67% of citizens say they are likely to vote, up from 58% at the same point in 2018.

Democracy is the core value that citizens want the European Parliament to defend most and it is the leading value in 14 Member States.
The majority of citizens are also satisfied with the way democracy works in the European Union (54%).

An absolute majority of EU citizens are satisfied with seven out of ten aspects of democratic life.
Free and fair elections (70%), freedom of speech (70%), and respect for fundamental rights (66%) generate the most satisfaction.

However, citizens also recognise the EP's key role in delivering solutions and want it to prioritise the fight against poverty and social exclusion (38%), public health (33%), climate change (31%) as well as supporting the economy/jobs (31%).

Equally, the impact of multiple crises is clear:
50% see a decline in their standard of living that they expect to continue and 65% aren't satisfied with Member State government actions aiming to tackle issues, while 57% are not satisfied with the EU's measures.
