@johnredwood Why not just abolish VAT? It's a tax on productivity and work, regressive in its effects, discourages business and enterprise. It doesn't reflect any useful measure of damage to anything. Replace it with income tax, import duties, and duties on damaging and destructive practices.

It brings in huge amounts to the Exchequer. If abolished, other taxes would have to rise. Politically toxic.
