@hagleypedant You're quite right and I concede that you know better than me from personal experience. I was only talking about the quality of the buildings and the size of the gardens provided in social housing in the 20th century. It was designed to offer a better quality of life.

@catherinerowett it will vary from place to place, I imagine. I grew up in the slums of Glasgow, eventually moving to a housing estate. Most housing estates here were in tenements with no garden or local amenities. The houses were a huge step up but no heating except one coal fire in the living room - ice inside windows and damp were common place. People got very sick.
@catherinerowett With zero amenities folk had to spend money they didn’t have on buses - few & far between - to go shopping or even pay the rent. The rise of addictions and crime came at a time of high unemployment. Essentially, folk were housed in better houses, but no consideration was given to local infrastructure or essential amenities. Basically, folk were abandoned.
@hagleypedant I know very well that the council estates became riddled with social problems, drugs, crime and violence, and that is certainly a terrible thing, and led people to get out if they had any chance. But we should ask what gave rise to that. It was not the housing as such.
