News about arbitrary suspension of journalists on Twitter is worrying. EU’s Digital Services Act requires respect of media freedom and fundamental rights. This is reinforced under our . @elonmusk should be aware of that. There are red lines. And sanctions, soon.

@VeraJourova Punish Musk and make a strategic decision to fund an alternative EU-based platform to Twitter and push for a mass migration. #democracy #security #defence

@Andy_Scollick @VeraJourova What is wrong with the fediverse that we need a centralized, EU-steered alternative?

@wufel @VeraJourova Wojciech, I thought the whole point was a network structure, with nodes from which different interest groups interact with the network? Therefore, there is nothing wrong in having nodes for defence, the EU, NATO and other security-related democratic institutions and interest groups, including political ones. You don't have to engage. But, I for one, will welcome it.

@wufel @VeraJourova Mastodon is great, but it's nowhere near as easy to use (visually mainly) as Twitter. The EU has the resources and incentive to back the development of this platform or, indeed, an entirely new one that is more user-friendly and visually appealing. It's not about 'centralising' anything: it's about developing this network to be what it needs to be; a genuine alternative to Twitter and other oligarchic/foreign-influence (FB, TikTok etc) platforms.

@Andy_Scollick @wufel @VeraJourova After all, the EU does not have to set up mastodon servers specifically for itself. The #fediverse is open to various projects (which are being developed all the time), so the specific software is secondary. The most important thing is that it should be #decentralised and based on existing and proven standards. And do we have any at the moment other than #activitypub ?

@VeraJourova Please define soon and share who exactly (no names but role/s, institution/s etc) are going to sanction Twitter. Please also take into account today's verdict of a court in Germany (Frankfurt/Main) that Twitter must not only delete /reported/ hate speech tweets but also so far /not reported/ tweets with similar hate speech content.

@proscience @VeraJourova this is a mirror account, so she most likely won't see this post

@jonaskosak @VeraJourova Thanks, I'm trying to add @EU_Commission then and hope that they'll see and forward it?

@proscience @VeraJourova @EU_Commission you can try, though in my very limited experience, they don't engage with the commenters much on Mastodon. There are definitely better ways to get their attention, like #ECI (but that takes a lot of time and effort)(I mostly wanted to mention it so more people know about it), or maybe just write to them through the EU website.

@jonaskosak @VeraJourova @EU_Commission Thanks again, much appreciated. 😀 My experience with messages via their website is underwhelming but perhaps one fine day that'll change......

@proscience @VeraJourova @EU_Commission Really? How? I never tried it, but they claim they will get back to you in 3 days, and I would think the EU would be desperate for attention.

@jonaskosak @VeraJourova @EU_Commission I've hardly gotten a response when I tried. I did get responses - from fantastic one addressing my request to unhelpful boiler plate texts missing the point - by other EU institutions and agencies than the Commission or Commissioners.

@proscience @VeraJourova @EU_Commission I am not a lawyer, but I looked over the Media Freedom Act, and I couldn't find what those sanctions could be. Looks like breaking it is more or less a civil wrong where the affected media could sue, and if the platform suspends them without cause repeatedly, the newly established European Board for Media Services will facilitate a good faith dialogue between them.

@VeraJourova Blocking Twitter from Europe may improve mental health across the Union

@VeraJourova @elonmusk Commisioner Jourova, have you been similarly concerned about Twitter Files findings, showing that state authorities apparently interfered into media content? Or you didn’t care? Or do you even like it?
