Last week, the European Parliament took a vote for the EU to finally accede to the Istanbul convention.

Years of hard work of tireless activists, politicians, feminists are paying off.

I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER.

Here are some of the ups and downs of the struggle so far. A thread:

We stand on the shoulders of giants.

With every step we take in the fight against gender-based violence, we validate the work of many feminists who came before us and made our successes possible.

In the last years, we experienced a systematic attack on the Istanbul Convention.

Even when times look dark, we cannot give up.

We have to continue to push for our aims.

A dark moment for Europe.

🇹🇷 withdrawing from the Istanbul Convention.

Last week, we have done something which many people did not think possible only some years ago.

…even with an authoritarian backlash happening.

Last week, we have shown:

When we work together as democrats, we can stand up to it.

And expand rights, freedoms and democracy.
RT @TerryReintke: The Istanbul Convention has become a symbol for the fight for free and open societies.

That is why it is under such heavy attack.

It destabilises patriarchy and strengthens fundamental rights.

That is why we have to continue to fight for it.
