RT by @JanAlbrecht: The Mayor of Istanbul Ekrem Imamoglu will now be seen as a frontrunner in the next presidential election after a walloping re-election victory in March’s municipal vote.

The next Turkish presidential election isn’t set until 2028, and this may be Erdogan’s final term in office — if you can believe that.

But the resounding answer from analysts on the subject of his successor will be Imamoglu, who secured a double-digit win over his rival from Erdogan’s party in the Istanbul mayoral vote.

Commentary has noted strong similarities between Imamoglu and Erdogan’s respective backgrounds, even if the two diverge starkly in politics.
