#FromTheArchives: Altiero Spinelli, a great pioneer of the EU, died #OnThisDay in 1986. In his ‘Spinelli Plan’, he led the proposal for a new European treaty and a constitution, also known as the Draft Treaty Establishing the European Union.

National parliaments rejected the plan; the European Parliament approved it. However, the work paved the way for the 1986 Single European Act.
