I emphasised that a deep structural crisis is unfolding: the war triggered skyrocketing energy prices & inflation, which made consumers to focus on basic foodstuff and to lower wine consumption. Plus, there are demographic differences in consumption, too.

The new generation's harmful way of alcohol consumption needs to be addressed: youngsters need to be educated about moderate wine consumption. Furthermore, the EU is putting extra administrative burdens on the shoulders of wine producers, which is unacceptable.

Further intentions to cut back wine consumption are also in the pipeline (like the European Anti-Cancer Plan). All this means a serious risk for the sector. Wine is more than a purely agricultural product: it implies culture, tradition, it makes inherent part of 🇪🇺 way of life.

I asked the Commission think ahead, monitor the trends and be proactive. It should give the Member States the necessary flexibility and consider the possibility of temporary introduction of intervention programs financed by EU, similar to Covid intervention measures.
