The first time the Commons rose to applaud was in 1897, when they heard of the almost unbelievable last stand by 21 Sikh sepoys against 10,000 Afghan tribesmen at Saragarhi.
The second was in 1918, when Britain won the Great War.
In our cheaper age, they do it every 5 minutes.
