RT by @simoncoveney: Today, the Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Seán Clancy welcomed the increase in the Patrol Duty Allowance for Naval Service personnel.

"This is a significantly positive step to getting the regeneration the new Naval Service on a positive footing. Ultimately, it is a recognition of the hardship that is endured by our Naval Service personnel serving at sea. It is recognition of the value the state places in them. The investment comes as a step forward in the Naval service regeneration plan, to support our personnel, for their commitment, courage and service."

These sentiments were echoed by the Flag Officer Commanding of the Naval Service, Commodore Michael Malone:

"The doubling of the patrol duty allowance and the maintenance of the maritime tax credit is very much welcomed, and reflects the commitment and hard work of Naval Service personnel serving at sea. This is a significant step in the continued regeneration of the Naval Service."

The changes will simplify the existing Naval Service measures by consolidating the daily allowance and the sea-going commitment scheme into one allowance. This is in line with the Commission on Defence Forces recommendation to replace existing sea-going allowances with less complex measures. These new measures will take effect from 1 January 2024.
