This morning we joined all Commonwealth countries for Remembrance Day. Today we remembered and honoured the memory of all the victims of the First and Second World War with a pontifical mass at St John’s Co-Cathedral, and later we laid wreaths at the War Memorial in Floriana.

Miriam and I thoroughly enjoyed the concert organised by the Honorary Consulate of the Slovak Republic at Sant’Anton Palace. It was a beautiful performance by the Maltese harpist Caroline Calleja and Slovak Violoncellist Eugen Prochác.

Band clubs were, and still are, a socio-political-cultural reflection ofour country. I thank the Għaqda tal-Mużika San Gejtanu and the Għaqda Nazzjonali Każini tal-Banda for organising the National Conference ‘Is-Soċjetajiet tal-Banda – il-Futur b’Rabta mal-Passat u l-Preżent’.

The increased use of devices such as mobiles while driving further increases the potential for accidents and fatalities. All of this is preventable. We need to take the lead & refrain from endangering ourselves & the lives of others by a distracted mind or selfish attitudes.

I called on everyone to recognize the mounting urgency of developing safer roads and better driving attitudes for all, as the figures are a terrible stain on our nation and one which should be urgently addressed. A collaborative approach is at the core of Vision Zero.

Yesterday evening we celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the official opening of the Phoenicia Hotel. In my speech, I remarked that in itself, this hotel is a historical building that also witnessed Malta’s political developments throughout the 20th and current Centuries.

Earlier today, I had the pleasure to receive a farewell call by Mr Thomas Wuchte, Executive Secretary at the International Institute for Justice and the Rule of Law. I thanked Mr Wuchte for his work and welcomed the numerous ongoing local training programs.

Earlier today I received a  courtesy call meeting by H.E. Natasha Meli-Daudey, Ambassador of Malta to the Federal Republic of . We exchanged views on challenges facing the Euro-Mediterranean region and agreed on the important role of promoting a diplomacy for peace.
