I just had an interesting meeting with the Maltese Canadian Business Network Association. The ties between 🇲🇹 & 🇨🇦 were discussed from different angles, ranging from ideas on initiating & strengthening business relations to education opportunities & cultural tourism exchanges.

In Toronto, we visited two food establishments that have a strong connection with Malta - Malta's Finest Pastries and Malta Bake Shop, which still keep Malta's culinary traditions alive abroad and are famous for the #pastizzi.

On Friday afternoon, we visited the ongoing works on the long-term care facility at Runnymede Healthcare Centre in #Toronto. The President and CEO, Connie Dejak, explained that the current works will increase places for the Maltese elderly in need of long-term care.

I had an interesting meeting with the Honorary Consuls of British Columbia, Alberta, & Quebec & with the #Canadian representatives on the Council for Maltese Living Abroad. We talked about the Maltese communities in 🇨🇦, their challenges & initiatives to keep the community united.

Today I held a meeting with Maltese Canadian associations. I’m glad to see how the 1st generation is passing on the baton to younger community members & followed with interest their plans to continue with their work through outreach projects on culture, inclusion & diversity.

The Acting President, Professor Frank Bezzina, presented the award for the best Local Council in waste management, which was awarded to the #Birgu Local Council. This was done during the 10th edition of the Malta Waste Reduction Awards. Congratulations to all winners. @WasteServ

The UN Secretary General referred in particular to the way in which the Maltese Presidency of the Security Council, which was spread over the month of February, managed to address very sensitive dossiers with great success.

On Tuesday afternoon, I held a meeting with the Secretary General of the United Nations, @antonioguterres, who highly commended #Malta on its work at the UN Security Council as a non-Permanent Member.

During a bilateral meeting with H.E. Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, President of #Mozambique, we discussed possible avenues of cooperation in the fields of investment, education, maritime matters, and tourism. We also exchanged views on stability in Africa and migration-related issues.

We remembered the victims of the 11th September terrorist attacks of 2001 and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing as we visited the 9/11 Memorial, where I laid a wreath in honour of the memory of all the victims.

We discussed the geo-political situation globally and the threats it is posing to multilateralism and agreed that #dialogue based on values is needed with partners, especially in #Africa. Youth have a central role in instilling dialogue.

On Sunday evening, accompanied by the Maltese delegation in New York, I visited the Maltese Center in Astoria. I would like to thank them for their warm welcome. It is always a pleasure to see that Maltese communities abroad are united and still promoting Maltese traditions.

Today I met with the members of the Maltese American Benevolent Society. We spoke about the society’s commitment to promote awareness of the Maltese Heritage and the advancement of the Maltese American Community. I encouraged them to remain united & to keep their ties with Malta.

This morning we visited the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in #Michigan, where I had the pleasure of meeting with workers of Maltese descent. We talked at length about their experiences at Ford and their ties to #Malta.

President George Vella & Mrs Miriam Vella left Malta for a visit to the United States & Canada. President George Vella and Mrs Vella will return to Malta on Monday, May 29, 2023. For the respective duration Professor Frank Bezzina will serve as Acting President of Malta.

I had the pleasure to receive a courtesy call by Mr John Minihan, Malta’s Honorary Consul in Cork, Ireland.
During our meeting, I fondly recalled my recent State Visit to the Republic of Ireland. We also discussed the strong bilateral links between #Malta and #Ireland.
