@gawanorniron @columeastwood @moneillsf You shouldn't have read that one letter to the exclusion of everything else we said before, and since: then you wouldn't need to ask. You should also have read it more carefully.

The issue was breaking international law, not opposition to mutually agreed change.

@RAPringleLait @GrahamMegennis @ashleyljames Except not. Because with the exception of a few set piece events, people are spread across a huge estate, and even the cost of security is huge.

Extend that to housing, and it may prove more expensive than the current capped rental/hotel allowances.

@HoChiMinsterman @GrahamMegennis @ashleyljames They mostly don't. They're pretty anonymous, so it isn't necessary in most cases. Having to do it would push up costs.

@UselessSpy @GrahamMegennis @ashleyljames Most NI MPs would love remote working. It does place genuine limitations on debate. In the Assembly, during Covid, we could ask questions/make speeches remotely, but Ministers couldn't introduce stages of Bills, answer debates or questions remotely, and you couldn't intervene.

@legacyJed @GrahamMegennis @ashleyljames Which isn't cheap to secure. It may actually cost more than the current arrangements.

Personally, the idea of pre-assigned accommodation would have worked well for me, but it's harder for young families and those with caring responsibilities.

@fairlyorganic @GrahamMegennis @ashleyljames See my earlier response - they mostly aren't in a single building/location and security costs are huge.

🐦🔗: n.respublicae.eu/naomi_long/st

@liam69857404 @GrahamMegennis @ashleyljames Except they are mostly not all in one place at the same time, but spread across the estate, and the security is very expensive.

If you extend that to their accommodation, it could actually cost more than the current capped expenses for accommodation.

@johnfezfearon @GrahamMegennis @ashleyljames I think they used to. It would certainly have suited me better than having to hotel-hop or rent, but I can see the cost implications of security, the impact on families, and of course the next round of headlines about how much it costs to run...

Expenses are already capped.

@bassbehaviour @GrahamMegennis @ashleyljames See my previous comment about cost.

🐦🔗: n.respublicae.eu/naomi_long/st

@alexbedwell_ @GrahamMegennis @ashleyljames It's not one building, but a huge estate spread over Westminster and the security bill for it is huge.

Doing that overnight for MPs and, in some cases, their families could end up costing more than hotels/flat rental (which are already capped expenses).

🐦🔗: n.respublicae.eu/naomi_long/st

@rich78murph @GrahamMegennis @ashleyljames As an MP or willing to allow them to? 🤔 🙂

All joking aside, two MPs have been murdered in recent years and the security concerns are not insignificant or irrelevant to the discussion: the cost of that could actually be greater than rentals/hotels.

🐦🔗: n.respublicae.eu/naomi_long/st

@davidspiteri33 @GrahamMegennis @ashleyljames The levels of security are significantly higher at Parliament than would be affordable on accommodation. It would push up the cost of accommodation significantly versus a hotel or flat.

🐦🔗: n.respublicae.eu/naomi_long/st

@Barry__Calder @GrahamMegennis @ashleyljames No. They aren't. They are spread across the government estate and rarely all in the same place at the same time. Quite different.

@wwmccrues @PoliceServiceNI @NIPolicingBoard @PoliceFedforNI Retaliate? Are you sure that's what you'd want? Officers meeting out violence to punish people with no trial?

They are rightly allowed to defend themselves and are armed for that purpose. They decided that level of force wasn't required, based on their professional judgement.

This is beyond depressing.

Those who wrote the sign should consider keeping their prejudices away from education and allowing young people to be enriched by experiencing diversity and learning respect for difference.

Nothing to lose by gaining knowledge other than ignorance...

Utterly abhorrent, violent attack on those serving the community and trying to keep people safe.

Wishing both officers a swift recovery and that those responsible for this are brought to justice.

RT @SorchaEastwood: I'm not going to lie, I find it awful being in Parliament Buildings when it should be a building full of life with debates in the chamber & important votes on critical issues but it is silent.

Sometimes you just have to plough on and try to get done what you can, so I will. 💛
