There could be years that are higher than this year in that average. To know the variation is statistically significant, you'd need more detailed analysis. That's my point

Individual years in the last 5 (which contributed to the average) could have been higher than this year while others were lower.

@paulfrewDUP I didn't claim to have done the fuller statistical analysis. I am simply pointing out that the conclusions others are making cannot be sustained on the evidence they are posting: further work would be required.

Being higher than the average of the last 5 years alone isn't proof of an *increase* in excess deaths. You'd need to plot the full data to analyse that.

You can't establish that from comparison with the 5 year average: you'd need to plot deaths for each of the last 10 years and compare them statistically to judge if the deviation was significant or within normal limits.
