RT @lesiavasylenko: Just minutes from my home. Just 20 minutes ago. What is #Russia trying to hit? The national university? The park? Or the playground?
Despicable, cowardly attack, killing and terrorizing innocent civilians in #Kyiv.
Say it, loud and clear: Putin is a war criminal.
Great to see our neighbors in #Austria 🇦🇹 so decisively rejecting far-right populism.
Congratulations to Alexander @VanderBellen upon his reelection as President!
Orban’s hot take on the Eurozone’s problems, from his infamous race-mixing speech:
“the South shows no willingness to suddenly change their culture, so their debt levels are at 120-150-180 percent”
I wonder how the “lazy Southerner” slur will fly with his Spanish far-right fans
As brave protesters continue to take to the streets in #Iran & the regime responds with escalating brutality, it’s evermore urgent that EU diplomacy swings into action.
Important panel organized by @BudapestForum22 on the links between political polarization & autocratization (which we see, up close in Hungary) & what we can do to save our democracies

RT @donmoyn: Authoritarian leaders firing public servants as a means to maintain power, stifle dissent about declining quality of public services
A background thread to the amazing protests in Budapest👇
RT @katka_cseh: Staggering crowds at yesterday's protests in Budapest, as students, teachers & allies rally against the crisis of public education in Orbán’s Hungary
👉 Some background to better understand what brought the situation to a boiling point for teachers & their incredible students 🧵
This is only the beginning. Both teachers & students feel that they have nothing left to lose, that things cannot get worse. They will continue demonstrating, demanding immediate reforms with prior consultation. We are fully behind them. And they need Europe’s support too.
10/
They are joined by tens of thousands of angry parents & allies, who understand that a country's future is being squandered by the incredible cynicism and shortsightedness of the Orbán-government. The masses' strong solidarity with teachers is truly touching.
9/
It is hardly surprising that teachers have had enough. Long-simmering frustration was now brought to the surface with the help of their students, who organised the current protest movement with amazing maturity and aptitude.
8/
The results are what one would expect. In international comparison, Hungarian students' performance has been dropping sharply over the past years along virtually all metrics. Not their fault, of course, but this clearly demonstrates that there is a BIG problem.
4/
An early-career primary school teacher in Hungary is looking at HUF 170.000, which is around EUR 400/month. No, I did not miss a zero.
A mid-career secondary school teacher is looking at HUF 240.000, or EUR 570.
The maximum one can aspire for is HUF 396.000, or EUR 940.
2/
But there’s a longer story behind. A key element is defunding public education, to the brink of collapse.
During the past decade, 3 consecutive Orbán-govt’s decreased funding for education by a whopping 16%.
Protesters know: no country can prosper with its future defunded.
1/
The immediate trigger was the sacking of several teachers, including Tamás Palya & Katalin Törley (pictured below)
It was retaliation for their civil disobedience action, their only form of protest left after the government outlawed strikes

You can’t make this up: while tens of thousands of protesters grind Budapest to a halt— taxpayer-funded public media (an Orban-mouthpiece) breaks news about “NEW WORKS OF ART IN THE EGG MUSEUM”

Budapest right now 🇭🇺💜
🚨 Happening now. 🚨 Thousands on the streets in Budapest. Outrage against the Orban government’s neglect of public education & solidarity with teachers who have been fired in retaliation for striking has really reached a boiling point.
Women. Life. Freedom.
Thank you, @abiralsahlani
