Re The USSR died a third of a Century ago, some countries once occupied (like mine) have outstripped in GDP per capita, rule of law, low corruption, press freedom, educational achievement much of the EU and the US.

Re I was born and grew up in the post-War West. 33 years after the end of WW2. Nobody but nobody in the media in 1978 wrote about "formerly Nazi Germany" in describing education, politics or economics in the Bundesrepublic.
France was never "formerly Nazi occupied Vichy". 3/3
