Yesterday in Parliament I confirmed the government will establish an independent statutory inquiry into the preventability of the Omagh bombing.

It is my full intention to establish the inquiry as promptly as possible and for the investigation to proceed at pace.

I have always said that the right people to make decisions for the people of NI should be locally elected Ministers in a fully functioning devolved government. That's why restoring the Executive is the best way to deliver on the pressing issues impacting the people of NI.

Today marks one year since the then-First Minister of Northern Ireland resigned. Twelve months and one Assembly election later, it is disappointing that people in Northern Ireland still do not have the strong devolved government that they deserve.

The Omagh Bomb Inquiry will have the full powers provided by the Inquiries Act 2005, including the ability to compel the production of all relevant materials and witnesses and take evidence under oath.

The Omagh bomb was a horrific terrorist atrocity, carried out by the Real IRA.

This is both alarming and disappointing. My thoughts are with those injured and I commend all PSNI officers for the work they do on a daily basis to keep the people of Northern Ireland safe.

I hope those responsible are brought to justice.
