At the border between Mauritania and Senegal, the local Red Cross receiving returned migrants lacks funds and even has to collect money from locals for food and medical care.

They get zero EU assistance, while on the contrary, local border police is given high tech equipment.

Apparently Orban can’t stand the integrity and authority of @andraslederer, who never compromises on the truth and human rights.
Human rights defenders have become outlawed in Hungary.

Very interesting meeting with the 🇸🇳 border police.

They expressed their concerns about involvement in pushbacks at EU borders, and rightfully posed the question what guarantees they will have that Frontex will respect human rights when acting on Senegalese territory.

Yesterday we met with the Ministry dealing with Senegalese living abroad. We were very warmly welcomed and had a fruitful exchange about the important work of the Ministry and its relationship with the EU.

Continuing our visit in Senegal 🇸🇳

We started with an insightful meeting with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who emphasized the need for a more human and development based approach towards migration - the total opposite of the EU's irrational focus on security and borders.

This morning, we met Mauritanian civil society representatives, the true cornerstone of the country's human rights protection.

They told us about problems that migrants and refugees face, including access to education and labour market, severely harming their future perspective.

RT @matteodebellis: Lithuania has also violated EU law - as the CJEU has ruled - and continues to carry out unlawful pushbacks leaving families in the cold.
The "Guardian of the Treaties" should call infringements out, not accept awards for keeping quiet.

Just now, we joined a Mauritanian Coast Guard patrol. Their main task is monitoring fisheries quota, but the EU wants them to focus on migration.

Interceptions at sea impact migratory routes, forcing people into the dangerous Algerian desert.

Chances of survival are very slim.

This week, @ErnstCornelia and I will be visiting Mauritania and Senegal.
We will particularly focus on the Frontex status agreements that the EU is currently negotiating with both countries, and possible human rights implications for migrants.

Because of the large implications that a status agreement has, it has to be formally approved by the EP.
@ErnstCornelia is appointed as the Rapporteur for Senegal, I am for Mauritania. That is why we jointly undertake this informal fact-finding mission.

I'm also worried about the provision in the EU negotiating mandate that Frontex staff should enjoy immunity, meaning they can't be prosecuted.
Especially with the tasks that border guards perform, this is very risky in terms of accountability and harms a country's sovereignty.

It is for example questionable whether people will have access to an asylum procedure in Mauritania or Senegal if they are intercepted by Frontex at sea and brought back.
There is a risk that people get stuck without access to protection, which is a basic fundamental right.

The possible deployment of Frontex officers in Mauritania and Senegal fits in a broader trend of externalization: Member States are deeply divided over internal reforms, so instead choose to outsource responsibility to non-EU countries - often at the costs of refugees’ rights.
