RT by @MarietjeSchaake: "If AI companies are left to their own devices, market concentration, privacy erosion and safety concerns will not independently be scrutinized. Why not tackle the problem at its root and build an ecosystem of trust?" — @MarietjeSchaake via @FT ow.ly/Lra650QfAZP

RT by @MarietjeSchaake: Former MEP @MarietjeSchaake makes it exceptionally clear in her @FT piece that "democratic institutions ought to govern powerful AI systems.''

"...an undetected flaw in a foundation model can ripple to thousands of downstream users who are building apps with the model. Is it fair to hold one business to account for using the product of another?''

"If companies like Open AI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind are left to their own devices, market concentration, privacy erosion and safety concerns will not independently be scrutinised. Why not tackle the problem at its root and build an ecosystem of trust?"

"With big tech power should come big responsibility, no matter whether French, American or German engineers built the system."

If these are supposed to be precise then both AI and army are failing: The precision of strikes recommended by the “AI target bank” has been emphasised in multiple reports.

RT by @MarietjeSchaake: Great @techreview piece by @mer__edith et al. "The AI market will only end up rewarding and entrenching the very same companies that reaped the profits of the invasive surveillance business model that has powered the commercial internet." RT by @MarietjeSchaake: Act: interesting remark by Commissioner Thierry Breton at the Telecom Council. "There has been a lot of lobbying to deal with. We are used to multinationals, but we also saw smaller companies [in this case]. We all have a role in protecting the general interest."

RT by @MarietjeSchaake: I don't know how the people of Gaza will overcome all of this pain. Everyone in the video is crying, women, children, and men.
Please don't believe in the myth of the resilience of the people of Gaza because what they're going through exceeds the human capacity for patience and resilience.

RT by @MarietjeSchaake: Wild story: someone took out an enormous short position against Israeli stocks five days before the October 7th attack, orders of magnitude bigger than normal trading activity and big enough to have made billions of shekels when the market crashed. haaretz.com/israel-news/2023-1

RT by @MarietjeSchaake: Together with Jaan Tallinn, the founding engineer of Skype and Kazaa, we wrote in the EU startup magazine Sifted that EU startups cannot currently trust general-purpose AI model developers. For a startup to meet safety standards under the EU AI Act, they'll need information and safety guarantees from the developers. They're not getting it: sifted.eu/articles/mistral-ale.

As negotiations on the AI Act unfold, there have been efforts to replace hard regulation for general-purpose AI models with soft codes of conduct. France, Germany and Italy have recently written a joint non-paper on the regulation of such models, advocating for "mandatory self-regulation through codes of conduct". This may be to the benefit of big tech companies — and perhaps, the French Mistral AI and German Aleph Alpha —but it will force European startups, such as downstream general-purpose AI model developers and deployers, to pick up the tab for legal and compliance costs.

Please share within your European startup networks to help them understand the situation better and ensure that the original developers of general-purpose AI indeed have legal responsibility.

RT by @MarietjeSchaake: Today we filed our first (yes, more planned) complaint on Meta's "Pay or Okay" system. Considering that users have on average 35 apps on their phone, you may soon pay € 8.000+ per year to keep your rights - let's see what the @EU_EDPB will say!

RT by @MarietjeSchaake: By the IDF’s most optimistic estimate, 86% of the 14,000 killed by Israeli bombs since Oct 6 are non-combatants.

This is a stunning figure. Even in the brutal 2014 war, civilian deaths were ~60% of total. theguardian.com/world/2023/nov
