@odtorson @danielrembrandt Yes, it would be rational for the Russians to make such an offer, because it probably would be acceptable for the domestic audience and tempting for the West.
In the context of the thread and everything I have said earlier, it is NOT rational to assume that this is what I wish.

9/10 The alternative is that you will be driven out not only from Northern and Southern Ukraine but also from Donbas and possibly from Crimea. Plus a very long-term economic and political isolation from the world.
8/10 Make a peace offer along these lines. The West might be tempted to take it. You can sweeten the offer by extraditing Mr Putin to an international tribunal.
The domestic audience will swallow this. "It has always been about Donbas", after all.
7/10 Turn necessity into virtue: Withdraw what remains of your army from Northern and Southern Ukraine into Crimea and Donbas. Point out that Donbas was the original reason for the operation. Blame everything else on Mr Putin.
6/10 Blame deposed Mr Putin and his clique for needlessly expanding the "Special Military Operation" from "liberating" Donbas to a full scale war. Tell the audience that Mr Putin, by micromanaging the operation, is alone and personally responsible.
5/10 The rational solution right now is to depose Mr Putin and a few other especially obnoxious and toxic characters. There is no return to any semblance of normalcy with these people in charge, even if they stopped the invasion at this moment.
4/10 You are worse off than Nazi Germany in 1944-45 because what manpower you have or can recruit is unmotivated and of very low quality. Also in that respect, it can only get worse.

2/10 You will run out of manpower without a mobilization (which you cannot do). Most of the available high-end equipment has already been committed, and much of that has been destroyed. The sanctions will make it very difficult to produce more.
