@christopherhope Technically, the very first hustings meeting is beginning right now, organised by the Association of Conservative Peers.

These rules might have been expressly designed to emphasize the candidades' faults and hide their virtues. They paralyse government, encourage dirty tricks, set MPs against party members and ensure that the eventual winner makes enemies along the way. conservativehome.com/2022/07/2

The first time the Commons rose to applaud was in 1897, when they heard of the almost unbelievable last stand by 21 Sikh sepoys against 10,000 Afghan tribesmen at Saragarhi.
The second was in 1918, when Britain won the Great War.
In our cheaper age, they do it every 5 minutes.

Apparently this was within days of being announced when Boris resigned. I can't for the life of me understand why it can't go ahead anyway. youtube.com/watch?v=M2g0mYvv3v

“You’ve got to be taught, to hate and fear
You’ve got to be taught from year to year…”
Rodgers & Hammerstein got it the wrong way round. You’ve got to be taught NOT to be tribal, NOT to blame people for their ancestors' deeds. That’s no longer happening.

Thanks, @TomTugendhat, for reminding us that there are still gentlemen in politics. You couldn't have campaigned in a more decent, sincere and courteous manner.

Wise to cancel the last TV debate. The format is guaranteed to emphasise the candidates' faults and obscure their virtues. All five are decent, diligent and patriotic. MPs should grill them privately. Party members will see plenty of hustings between the final two.

Italiani fortunati!
RT @alessabocchi: In Italian, “non-binary” is either “non-binario” or “non-binaria”. Meaning it’s either feminine or masculine, like most words in Latin languages.

The Latin world will be shielded from gender neutral propaganda.

Tunisia is sliding into dictatorship. Having disbanded parliament and arrested several critics, President Saied has now summoned Speaker @R_Ghannouchi before his Anti-Terrorism Unit. It was Ghannouchi who oversaw Tunisia's transition to democracy after 2011. Deeply worrying.

Trains are running perfectly well in these parts.
I’m pretty sure that, pre-pandemic, we used to encourage people to come to work if they reasonably could. Now, “work from home” has become a first recourse, covering everything from strikes to hot weather.
