RT @mirfin_theo: Excellent piece from ⁦@DanielJHannan⁩ in the ⁦@Telegraph⁩ today.

“He lost the first half of his premiership to Covid, but he still has an 80-seat majority. It is time to govern like a Conservative – for Britain’s sake as well as his own.” telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/05/0

Let’s be precise in our language. A party is a festive congregation of invited guests, not a break for food and drink with office colleagues. Neither party leader has been shown to have attended one during lockdown.

So Starmer was being slippery and evasive at the same time that he was being pompous and censorious. Not a good look, we can all agree. But a resigning issue? Seriously?
RT @christiancalgie: NEW: The Sunday Times has a Labour source present at the Durham party who confirms NO work was done after the curry and beer, as per Mail on Sunday's leaked op note.

The Times' source is willing to help Durham police with their inquiries. h…

RT @harryph: .@DanielJHannan: "To watch Labour frontbenchers now scrambling to argue that, no, an investigation is only an investigation is a piece of irony so funny – so beautiful, indeed – that it could be mounted on Trafalgar Square’s fourth plinth." telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/05/0

I once gave a talk to some Year 7s, and showed them slides of meerkats that looked like @nigel_farage, orangutans that looked like @BorisJohnson and manta rays that looked like @David_Cameron. This (just found in a drawer) was their thank you letter.

This intervention by @RandPaul is brilliant. It isn’t up to governments to tell us what constitutes misinformation. Governments are themselves repeat offenders when it comes to misinformation. We should trust people’s common sense.

@JuliaHB1 That, Julia, is a Rorschach Tweet. Almost everyone will respond by saying “Exactly! The other guy knew very well what he was doing, but my guy didn’t!”

No one should be punished or made to resign for (at worst) unwittingly breaking the letter of the COVID regulations. Agree with me or disagree with me: fine. But you can’t disagree only when it’s someone you happen not to like.

RT @DanielJHannan: This is preposterous. Durham police, like the Met, have caved into political pressure to interpret the rules in a way that no one understood them at the time. What kind of banana republic are we, using retrospective investigations to pursue political opponents?

Her chief interactions with paramilitaries in Northern Ireland were:
1. They tried to murder her
2. They failed
3. She defeated them
RT @mickthetaig: Thatcher famously had no involvement with paramilitaries in the north of Ireland

@AnotherDevGuy @MrHarryCole A new twist in the saaga. Will Labour MPs insist that Starmer be Goan?

Worth noting that Sinn Féin outpolled the DUP in 2010. Indeed, the SDLP outpolled the UUP in the first ever Stormont election in 1998. (Both times, a quirk of the system gave the Unionists more seats.) Overall support for pro-UK and pro-Ireland parties has barely moved.

@SteveDavies365 I'm not sure even that's true, sadly. The position of both FF and FG, as well as of a great many commentators, is that, while SF is not fit to participate in a Dublin government, its participation in a Belfast government is vital.

@JosephDSmithBL The DUP was never linked to any paramilitary organisation. And I suspect the Union is stronger now than it was last week. Plenty of people from all traditions hate the idea of being incorporated into a state dominated by a party that is connected to organised crime.

Sinn Fein is a party linked to paramilitary violence which, within recent memory, was justifying the murder of civilians. Will commentators who raged against the elections of, say, Trump or Orbán, take to the airwaves with equal indignation? If not, why not?
