Search and rescue dogs 🐕‍🦺 are essential to saving lives in post- settings.

This week, we've witnessed the incredible work of over 100 such dogs, who've been supporting more than 1,650 rescuers sent via the Mechanism to the most affected areas in 🇹🇷.

How does this work? ⬇️

Search and rescue dogs are trained to use their incredible olfactory systems to identify individual scents under debris and give a sign - e.g. bark - when they find one.

Sometimes, handlers first let the dog smell an item or piece of clothing that belongs to the missing person to facilitate the search.

Well-trained search and rescue dogs help to make the searches precise and increase the chances of success. 🙌
