RT by @ECDC_EU: My thanks to our partners at @ECDC_EU - under the leadership of Director Dr Pamela @rendiwagner - and Sweden's @Folkhalsomynd for today's deliberations on the scenario in the @WHO_Europe Region, within the wider context of the mpox challenge globally.

The European Region was the initial epicentre of the 2022 mpox clade II outbreak - focused primarily in men who have sex with men.

Today's scenario involving the ongoing mpox clade I outbreak in several African countries - with one confirmed clade Ib case reported in Sweden linked to travel to East-Central Africa - is a reminder that a public health threat in one part of the world can impact regions well beyond.

That our world is interconnected - a lesson learnt during in no uncertain terms.

That collaboration across countries and regions, across agencies and institutions, is critical in tackling the challenges we have in common.

That surveillance must be robust, diagnostics must be top-notch, and access to prevention and treatment unfettered.

That there's no room whatsoever for stigma and discrimination targeting infected or impacted individuals and communities. Rather, we must foster an environment imbued with equity and dignity for all.
