We have a sobering warning this - despite having the tools to end , the European Region remains a long way from meeting its targets.

Our latest joint report on shows that, despite an overall downward trend in the incidence of in the WHO European Region, the rate of decline will not be sufficient to meet the UN targets for ending the TB epidemic by 2030.

To , it is necessary to:
- stop transmission (identification of active TB cases)
- prevent development of TB in infected patients.

There is also an increased burden of drug-resistant cases, low treatment success rates & service disruption caused by the pandemic.

Just three years ago, prior to the pandemic, the Region was experiencing the fastest decline in incidence and mortality in the world.

In 2021, TB mortality in the Region increased compared to 2020, and the declining incidence curve has stalled for the first time in 20 years.
