Re It also calls for the abolition of extra fees for intra-EU calls. As the current caps are expiring in May 2024 we have a narrow window to take action & I believe that GIA is the right instrument to allow users to call in the EU free of charge.

1) The Gigabit Infrastructure Act report, which I am coordinating as @europarl_en rapporteur, has just been published. This is a firm step towards achieving fast, easy and cheap deployment of very high capacity networks across the EU. Here are the main proposals 👇

Re 2) I emphasize the key aspect of choosing a Regulation as legal instrument. We need common rules, while allowing for flexibility for the specific needs of the Member States & the possibility to exceed these requirements, particularly if they aim to be more ambitious.

Re 3) In order to address close the digital divide between rural and urban areas, I expanded access to existing physical infrastructure obligations to commercial buildings in remote and scarcely populated areas, in well defined scenarios, where other alternatives are not available.

Re 4) Assessed the role of towers. In order to a avoid speculative behaviour, a new obligation for landowners where the towers are built/installed, to negotiate the price with TowerCos, under fair and reasonable terms is introduced;

Re 5) Enhanced coordination during the permit granting procedure, through the introduction of a single coordination authority;

Re 6) Shorter timelines for granting permits (max 3 months extendable for another max 3 months) and dispute settlement proceedings.

Re 7) Strengthened the role of stakeholders and BEREC in the drafting process of guidelines;

Re 8) Introduced the abolition of the fees for intra-EU calls for end-users. We need this urgent solution, as the current rules are due to expire in less than a year. It will help our citizens and allow us to create a true 🇪🇺 single market for digital and telecommunication services.

Re @alinmituta doesn't want you to pay extra when you call or text someone within the bloc.
For lack of "a clear way forward" from the Commission, the Gigabit Infrastructure Act is the "appropriate legislative vehicle" to end these surcharges, he said. pro.politico.eu/news/165224
