Enlargement is arguably the most important foreign policy tool of the European Union.
Today enlargement is first and foremost about geopolitics. It is as much about values and security, as about prosperity and stability.
Glad to see the Commission proposing accession negotiations with Bosnia-Herzegovina, Moldova and Ukraine, as well as giving candidate status to Georgia.
Membership continues to be the preferred choice of most European states. By 2030 we will be a Union of 30-35 member states.
Is enlargement easy? No. Is it necessary? Yes. Will it make decision-making more complicated? Certainly. Will the EU manage? It always has.
