Fair play to Steve Hodge for selling “that” Diego Maradona shirt for over £7m. He must’ve earned more from that deal than he did throughout his entire football career - No doubt, some numpty will still say that footballers are thick and lack any business acumen.

Great to be back in one of my favourite Dublin pubs, Doheny & Nesbitt. Even better to catch up with @MarkHennessy @IrishTimes, talking medals and, as expected, some politics. A journalist who I’ve always respected.

RT @nigelely: If you don't have the time to read, or reading just isn't your thing, please do have a look at the Goose Green audiobook. Narrator, Jonathon Keeble has done a superb job in capturing all the many acccents of the contributors. Minutes short of 12 hours of entertainment.

RT @ONLYONEGIBBO: Today pause and remember the brave 20 @RoyalNavy sailors still on patrol on the 40th anniversary of HMS Sheffield being hit by an Exocet in the South Atlantic. The shinny Sheff sank six days later during the campaign to retake @FalklandsGov

The medals that he wears are the Diamond Jubillee Medal 1897, Ashantee Medal 1873-4, DCM, Ashanti Star, LSGC. The second photo is a close up, taken in London, 1897.

As it’s Eid, here’s a great photo of a distinguished Muslim soldier (left). Native Officer Mahamadu Danbornu of the Gold Coast Constabulary, taken circa 1898. A veteran of both the Third & Fourth Ashanti wars, he was awarded the DCM in 1890 & served the crown for 30 around years.

@MikeFoster1403 The other co-leader was on 5Live discussing the local elections & spent the whole interview avoiding energy security, muttering about renewables. Not a single word about local policies & unable to work out how to get her message out, if, indeed she had one. Pure student politics.

Delighted to have been able to identify this long forgotten soldier in the middle as Sumanu Gbari of the Lagos Hausa Force, It was taken at the Army School of Music, Kneller Hall, Middlesex in around 1895. He was later awarded the DCM for bravery during the Ashanti 1900 campaign.

@warsmatter @Taff_Gillingham @James1940 Not at all, I’ve never had a problem being corrected, even when the answer is obvious.

@warsmatter @Taff_Gillingham @James1940 I’ve just conceded publicly William! Best wishes. I saw Keith S last week, who sends his regards to you

@Taff_Gillingham @marksimner @James1940 I should’ve listened to mum and what she said about not finishing my carrots affecting my eyesight!

@Taff_Gillingham @marksimner @James1940 Hands up! I now see your point Taff, the right hand angle completely threw me. I just couldn’t see the far edge of the BWM, so saw too much - Point of interest, here’s my grandfather, also a BAOR man, wearing his WW1 Pair. Around the same time as this man.

@marksimner @Taff_Gillingham @James1940 No worries, whatever it is, it’s a great find and worthy to hang on anyone’s wall.

@Taff_Gillingham @marksimner @James1940 I agree that the width of the VM can confuse, but the colours of the ribbons say differently. Also remember that smaller width ribbon bars were widely available at this time. The first medal could be an LSGC or St. John Ambulance Boer War medal, in the wrong position.
