6/7 It is more beneficial for everyone to contain the anger within Russia. The West should not create a valve for letting out the pressure. There is a chance the mobilization leads to wide unrest and rebellion in Russia.
5/7 The Russians who run to Georgia and Finland do not oppose the war. They have been completely quiet for seven months. They oppose being mobilized. Once safe abroad, they can return to the couch and keep waving the flag.
4/7 This is what Mr Putin's popularity is based on. The middle-class has been able to enjoy both Great Russian fantasies and personal comfort. As I have said before, the comfort must be taken away from the middle-class. This is what the sanctions and travel bans are all about.
3/7 An overwhelming majority of Russians support the war - from the couch. A very small minority is willing to go to the front or send their family members. Let the Buryats and Kalmyks go!
2/7 This is probably no more than a knee-jerk reaction. For certain politicians, the default solution to any problem anywhere - be it famine, climate change, poverty, inequality, or war - is to bring people to Finland.
In this case, however, this is a particularly bad idea.

Update: Today Foreign Minister Haavisto announced the Finnish government will take measures to restrict or prevent tourist traffic - with new legislation or reinterpretation of that which exists.

@ilvestoomas @hsfi @SofiOksanen @sakkov Earlier, HS was active in finding Nazis in the Ukrainian military and propagating general defeatism. The pro-Kremlin message has been gradually toned down as a Russian victory has become an ever more distant possibility.

8/8 Let it therefore be recorded that as late as three days ago the biggest newspaper in Finland campaigned in its editorial for keeping the border open and implied that Finland, unlike the Baltic States and Poland, defends the rule of law.
7/8 Once that happens, it will be very difficult to find anyone in the media or politics who would admit that they have ever opposed closing the border. This is how it works in Finland. Nobody ever admits having been wrong and having changed their mind.

5/8 The open land border also gives Russia a possibility to circumvent the sanctions. They can use the visa holders to purchase sanctioned items, high technology for example, in Finland. It is much easier to transport stuff in cars than in suitcases via Istanbul.
4/8 Of course, Russians could fly to the Schengen area via Turkey even if Finland did close its borders. This is partly a moral question. Do we want to show solidarity a) to Russians or b) to Ukraine, Poland and the Baltic States?
3/8 Russians use the Helsinki airport to connect with tourist destinations. In the airport car park you can see long rows of expensive cars with Russian plates. I suspect they do not belong to Russian dissidents who are the main excuse for keeping the border open.
