Europe must urgently implement the strict crypto regulations to counter financing Hamas and other terrorists. Hamas earns millions annually through construction firms in Turkey, donations from Qatar, and through social media campaigns in Europe and the Arab world. We need to stop this. An effective way is to track the crypto accounts associated with Hamas.
On behalf of the European Parliament, I negotiated a law last year to make it easier for authorities to trace crypto transactions of criminals and terrorists. Crypto-platforms must keep good records of their customers and are obligated to cooperate in investigations. The law was almost unanimously adopted in the European Parliament.
Officially, the new rules will only come into effect at the end of 2024 at European level. I call on Member States to take steps now and work together with crypto-platforms to halt the money flow to Hamas.
This collaboration is crucial to keep cryptocurrencies safe for well-intentioned investors and simultaneously keep terrorists out of the crypto world.
