Never give terrorists a break! In the past months, I have been working on a new legislation to tackle terrorism and other serious crimes. The justice committee has just approved my report. The Advanced Passenger Information regulation will strengthen member states’ capacity to prevent, detect, investigate and prosecute terrorism and serious crime. The first step is to make sure criminals cannot fly under the radar in our countries and hurt our citizens. But it is very difficult for members states to detect them.
This new, privacy-compliant legislation will help get the right information about passengers to the right authorities. The automated data collection will make life easier for customers but more difficult for terrorists and other criminals. This will make Europe safer for our citizens.
I am proud to be the lead negotiator of the European parliament for this regulation an grateful for the good collaboration with my colleagues.
The new rules strengthen the fight against terror and organised crime while respecting privacy. In practice, this regulation is also a strengthening of our European external borders and more grip on terrorists and other criminals already travelling under the radar within Europe.
I am grateful for the strong mandate that the parliament gave today to enter inter-institutional negotiations with the council and the commission. It is an urgent matter. We must fight terrorism and all other crimes and always protect our citizens.
